Mission Statement
Our mission is to deliver the strength of our collective experience on large industrial equipment failures to Insurers seeking the support necessary to clearly define policy coverage and Owners needing the clarity necessary to understand the technical issues related to the claims process.
History
M.G. Thomas & Associates, Inc. was formed in 1989 to support Insurers and their representatives in understanding events, costs, repair scope, time to repair and cause related to major failures in power generation equipment. This support began solely on turbine and generator equipment, both steam and gas, in the power generation industry, but later grew to axial flow compressors, large motors, transformers, wind turbines, hydro turbines and expanders in the petroleum, pulp and paper, and chemical industries.
The business model was to engage experienced subcontractors to support the additional work during busy times to assure proper handling of every need of Insurers. In 2001, Mark Bremmer of MA Bremmer and Associates, Inc. began handling some of the more difficult projects. Mark and his company brought in a sense of detail and knowledge on power generation equipment from his Nuclear, Project Management and Commissioning experience with Westinghouse.
In 2009, Bob Daniels of RE Daniels Consulting, Inc. began filling in with Mark, bringing a unique blend of practical experience on the equipment from his US Navy career, and a deep understanding of Risk Management and Control during his employment with Hartford Steam Boiler and later with the AES Global Insurance Company. His credentials as an Authorized Boiler Inspector for those years added further available capability to the Company to occasionally support losses related to boiler failures and water chemistry issues, which often affects the steam turbine.
In 2011, Neal Grabow of N-Tec, Inc. agreed to work with Mike on projects while continuing the energy related work of his existing company. He agreed to support the increasing number of losses that were occurring worldwide, while adding yet another very practical element from his days in the US Air Force. With his experience at Hartford Steam Boiler as an Authorized Nuclear Inspector and work on rotating equipment assessments and failures, he provided a unique understanding of Insurance issues pertinent to the energy claims process.
By 2015, the companies were working closer together, requiring a decision be made regarding business continuation and structure to support Insurers and their clients. Mike began the process of long term business development by engaging legal and accounting specialists to begin establishing a Business Plan and Operating Agreement that would serve Insurers into the future without Mike being the only face of the company.
As plans for the new company were coming together, Brian Glynn of BKG Consulting, Inc. agreed to work with the others while the new business plan was being developed. In March of 2016, Brian started providing expertise in shop processes and repair capabilities. His background as a Field Engineer for Westinghouse, followed by shop operations experience with TurboCare and Ethos Energy, exponentially improved the efficiency in managing the volume of losses as an exceptional resource for the unique repair procedures available today.
Finally, MGTA Group, LLC was formed on July 1, 2017 to bring together the cumulative experience and knowledge of the entire group into one by sharing ownership in the venture. The decision to re-form the company into a single cohesive group provides an unimpeded step into the future and a succession planning foundation that offers the technical experience originated by Mike Thomas, expanded through our team, and expected by our clients.
Our Team
Mike graduated from the University of Texas, Austin in 1971 with a BSME and immediately joined General Electric as a Field Engineer working on steam and gas turbines and generators. After a short time in the field, he returned to Schenectady, New York where he received advanced training in Large Steam Turbine Start-up and Generator Specialist, then returned to Texas to continue this work in the field. Continuing to progress through the Power Generation Field hierarchy, Mike completed his work with GE as the Manager of Projects for the Southern Region, handling total plant installations and commissioning of combined cycle and steam plants.
Using this experience, he left GE and worked for Environmental Power Corporation, a developer of waste to energy facilities, then started M.G. Thomas & Associates, Inc. in 1989, with his team gathering experience on over 2,200 failures of power generation equipment representing major Insurers. This experience was strengthened by the Partnership, with shares ownership as MGTA Group, LLC.
MGTA Group, with its tag line “Answers Through Experience” was created to capitalize on the depth of knowledge of the team as one entity, with everyone having equal interests in its future to continue serving the Insurance industry.
Mark earned a BSME in 1983 from the University of Pittsburgh, with a Minor in Mathematics, after which he immediately went to work for Westinghouse Electric’s Nuclear division. In 1984, he transferred to Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, Georgia and in 1987, Mark was transferred to Westinghouse’s Combustion Turbine division in Orlando, Florida where he gained extensive knowledge of combustion turbine operation and maintenance.
He was instrumental in developing a materials packaging system and long-term maintenance program for combustion turbines, including preparing detailed proposals for combined cycle plants at various international locations. In 1991, Mark became a Project Manager responsible for the turnkey installation of combined cycle plants from start to finish, both domestic and international, with typical plant installed capacity exceeding 500 megawatts and project costs in excess of 600 million dollars.
Mark used his combustion turbine knowledge and international experience with M.G. Thomas & Associates, Inc. since 2001, supporting Insurance Loss Adjusters and Underwriters worldwide. Support included evaluation of losses associated with gas and steam turbines and generators, providing repair estimates and solutions for claim resolution. Claim values range up to 100 million US dollars and include all manufacturers.
Bob began his career in industry during his sophomore year in high school, working as a certified code welder for a local manufacturer in Wyoming, where he was born and raised. After being honorably discharged from a six-year enlistment in the United States Navy as a propulsion engineer, he began working in the traditional insurance market as a risk analyst.
He earned two degrees during his sixteen-year employment with Hartford Steam Boiler before transitioning to Vice President at the AES Global Insurance Company where he assumed the task of building a state-of-the-art loss control program. During his tenure at AGIC, Bob worked closely with Mike Thomas while conducting AES equipment failure investigations, and in 2009, joined Mike’s team and continues supporting Insurers in the energy industry as a Partner with MGTA Group.
His favorite quote is by Barbara J. Winter, “When you come to the edge of all the light you know, and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen: there will be something solid to stand on, or you will be taught to fly.”
After graduating high school in 1980, Neal left the family farm and commercial construction business in Minnesota to join the U.S. Air Force. During this time, he serviced the missile fields and base facilities from the Civil Engineering department until his enlistment commitment was completed. Neal then spent 21 years working for Hartford Steam Boiler, providing loss control and inspection services, including nuclear facilities, code construction, power generation and heavy manufacturing.
He then ventured into the private sector, initially in the HVAC segment, then later developing a failure prevention and root cause investigation practice, which has served electrical power generation facilities throughout the world. In 2011, Neal joined the team serving insurers of power generation and industrial facilities as an Associate.
Neal brings significant experience and knowledge to the newly formed MGTA Group as a Partner in the venture to continue serving the insurance industry on energy related losses, while sharing the benefits of the business model from which it was developed.
After graduating from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the spring of 1982, Brian began his career in the turbomachinery industry with Westinghouse Electric as a Turbine Field Engineer. In 1989, he joined TurboCare where he held various positions gaining a vast amount of experience in the day to day operation of turbomachinery repair and manufacturing facilities. This experience included estimating, scheduling, engineering and repairs.
In 2008, he became a Senior Vice President within the TurboCare Group, with responsibility for all the TurboCare facilities located in the Americas, which provided parts and services for gas turbines, steam turbines, generators and compressors. In February of 2016, Brian retired from TurboCare and is now a Partner in the new venture, MGTA Group.
Brian, since joining the team has been heard to say “I always knew that Mike and his team had a lot of respect within the industry, but what I did not realize was how much enjoyment and pride the team has in supporting their customers. It is a pleasure to be a part of this venture as we begin our new chapter as MGTA Group.”
TJ earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 from Michigan Technological University before joining Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation as a Field Service Engineer where he earned the best in class “Top Gun Award” while enrolled in the Engineer In Training program. He was born and raised in the industry while located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and being involved with the core engineering, management and union labor teams remaining from the nuclear and coal fired steam turbine construction boom and regulated power industry maintenance programs.
Rising through the ranks of the Field Service Division, his career path included the challenges of managing steam turbine, gas turbine and generator maintenance projects; combined cycle total plant new constructions; and aggressively scheduled nuclear refueling outage equipment upgrades and repowering projects. He ultimately was a founding member of an internal Siemens niche group managing the implementation of some of the most complex projects in the industry resulting from catastrophic loss events both domestically and internationally.
After almost 20 years of loyal service with Siemens, TJ decided to apply his unique skill set with MGTA Group in the support of Insurers, many associated with large catastrophic losses. His addition to the MGTA Group Team provides a younger face with excellent talents to properly support the needs of Insurers, and thereby Owners, involved with each assignment. TJ enhances the many years of experience already available from the Group with his diverse background on large projects and the unique requirements of Insurers.
